| How to Find Meaning in your Quiet Time
Posted 8/24/07
Remember when you were learning how to write? You used that huge pencil that barely fit into your tiny hand. With your tongue sticking out of the side of your mouth, you concentrated slowly and each and every letter. Writing a simple word like dog or cat took several minutes of work. And forget it if something happened to break your attention (maybe that's where my ADD began).
Now, writing works have become such a natural part of your life, that you don't even think about how to write a word (until you have to write a word like antidisestablishmentarianism).
The same is true when it comes to studying God's Word. Right now, studying God's word may seem like hard work. It may be easier to just come to church and have someone else teach you. Avoid the temptation to be spoon fed. Spend time digging into the Word for yourself. Studying God's Word is something that really does get easier as you practice.
Read Acts 17:11-12
The Bereans were a groups of people that didn't just accept what they heard from Paul. They began a daily examination of the Old Testament Scriptures, to see if Paul's teaching were true. When was the last time you eagerly read the Bible (like the Berean people)?
Don't fall into the trap of just skimming through God's Word and checking off your devotional plan for the day! STUDY God's Word- there's a BIG difference between reading and studying.
TIPS FOR STUDYING GOD'S WORD
1. Pray before reading God's Word.
2. Read the Scripture Passage slowly. Read it more than once.
3. Pay attention to the context of Scripture.
4. Ask yourself: What does this verse or statement mean?
5. Ask yourself: How can I apply this truth to my life?
6. Do what the Word says.
